Stuff I Came Up with Trying to Watch Women's British Open

CTP Update

I know most of BB's are aware of the Cardinals place in the standings as they race for the NL Central title. More importantly, here are the standings of Bud's Boys CTP fight to the finish for 'King of 18'.

Randy      8
Raymond 7
Glen         7
Andy        6
Clint         6
Tom         4
Doc          4
Rodney    4
Floyd       4
Jeff           4
Bob          4

Mikey, Allen, Scott, Dean, and Westy at 3. Shelly, Leroy, and Roger at 2.

Those are the raw numbers up to this point of the season, but with a closer look, let's see who the real sharpshooters are.

Staying with a baseball comparison, most everyone knows Goldschmidt leads the majors in batting average at .330. Nearly no one knows that Freddy Freeman has the most hits. In baseball, the best average is celebrated, the most hits not so much. How about we look up the 'CTP Average' of Bud's Boys. (Math for dummies note; hits/CTP divided by at bats/times played). Goldschmidt's .330 average means he gets a hit about every 3 at bats. Here are BB's top 10 CTP averages.

Clint         .200
Floyd        .190
Andy        .130
Raymond .127
Rodney    .121
Randy      .107
Dean        .100
Glen         .096
Westy       .088
Jeff           .082

Yes, it is Clint 'One Spot out of the Money' Ruppel who is our sharpshooter thus far, with Floyd close behind. Interesting to note that they have the fewest appearances of the 10 listed. The editorial board of this publication would like to state this observance of the facts lest Clint or Floyd's attitudes become, shall we say, a little too uppity. Every year in baseball, someone starts out hot with a 400 plus average only to see it drop as the strain of constant competition brings the average back normal. It is our contention that a higher rate of attendance will bring them back to the pack.

Regardless of the above numbers, we are not baseball, and our prize for most CTP's is far too huge to be watered down by percentages. We like it simple. The most wins. Good luck and good hunting for the remainder of the year.

Bud's Boys in the News

We like to share anything that pops up in the papers about our boys, and this recently came across our desk. The July 30-31, 2022, edition of the Southeast Missourian ran a look back to an old-timer's game at Capaha park, 50 years ago. (Published July 1, 1972)

I recognized many names, especially this one.

Allen came through with a top performance as stated in the article. Good fielding and hitting.

While Allen's excellent performance does not surprise me (I remember playing against him in softball in the mid 70's), it begs this question. If Allen was considered an old-timer 50 years ago, just how old is he now?

Also from July,1972, 2 weeks after I turned 16. Gas 13 cents a gallon!

I need to complete a story started recently about Leroy at age 7. I received a scathing letter asking how did I not read the rest of the article from the 1956 Missourian. A big swing and a miss on my part. Move over Mr. Peabody, let's get back in the 'Way Back Machine' and correct this mistake. We've already covered Leroy's Monologue recognition, next up is

sack race. I suggest a recreation of the race, perhaps against a BB's of his choosing. Not surprising is

his mastery of arithmetic, as he is easily one of our more accomplished scorekeepers. Neat writing, flawless math. Half-points do not scare him! These facts you can see. What you can't see are the behind-the-scenes maneuvers by Oak Ridge hierarchy to bring this talented 7-year-old to their school. In one of the first recorded cases of school recruiting in the area, Leroy leaves Old Appleton at the completion of his 2nd grade year to enroll at Oak Ridge. You can look it up.

Strange Sign of the Week

On one of our days off, I was bike riding through the old hometown of Scott City when I had to do a doubletake. A section known as Country Club has a onetime lagoon that has been dry and grass covered for many years. As I rode by, I noticed this.

Curiosity raises a couple of questions. Who was so 'Teed Off' (heh-heh) that they got the city to not just put up a sign, but a rather official looking sign? What would be the penalty for ignoring this sign by chipping or lobbing a wedge? Stroke and distance? Ten to twenty? I need answers.
