 Champion Golfer Tournament Breakdown

I will replay the big year end tournament in four parts. Each 9-hole stretch of the two days.

Also recap of last Tuesday's regular play and Thursday scoreboard as well.

Due to a tee time pirate stealing 2 of our regular Friday times, we will start at 9:26 this coming Friday. More reminders to come.

Repeat, 9:26 start this Friday.

Third Annual 2024 CGOTY Tournament

The first day of the big event was contested under superb playing conditions and the 18 eager participants took advantage of the Front 9 with some positive scores.

Brian's birdie on #7 gave him the 9-hole lead with a +4 1/2 total of 15 points.

Butch's birdie on #8 gave him an impressive 17 Front 9 points and a +4 Total.

Dean birdied holes 3 and 9 to match Butch's 17 points for a +2 1/2 Front 9.

Rick birdied #7 to tie Dean at +2 1/2.

In all, half of the players finished on the plus side.

The standings after 9 holes.

As usual the Back 9 played tougher with the scores dropping an average of 1 point per player.

Tom scored a group best 18 points on the Back 9 to finish his day on the plus side.

Three players tied for the best Back 9 score of +2 1/2.

Raymond used a birdie on #12 to be one of the three.

Brian added a birdie on #11 to add to his excellent Front 9 and also post a +2 1/2 on the Back.

Day 2

As previously posted, Friday was a washout with the several inches of rain postponing round 2 until Tuesday. The conditions were not as benign as last Thursday as the wind was kicking up most of the day. The results reflected the conditions as point totals dropped nearly 2 points per player on the Front 9.

Front 9

Only 3 of the 18 players finished the Front 9 with a plus score.

Randy makes the biggest move. Birdies on 7 and 9 give him 19 points for a +3 1/2 jump.

Rick pars 7 of the 9 holes to add 2 1/2 to his Total.

Dean also has 7 pars on the opening 9 to add a 1/2 point to his card.

The four leaders all fall back a bit. Floyd loses 3 of his plus total and Brian and Butch deduct 2 1/2 from theirs. Raymond limits his drop to only one point, keeping him right in the thick of the Back 9 chase.

Here is where we stand with 9 holes to play.

Brian still holds on to the lead, but Randy, Rick, Raymond, Jeff, and Dean are all in striking distance. Butch, Tom, and Floyd will need to rally and hope the leaders stumble for any chance. The Back 9 is always tougher, and the wind and the scoring has already placed a toll on the leaders. Who has the most gas in their tank?

The Final 9

Tom explodes with a 20-point final 9, easily the best number coming in with Birdies on 13 and 18 and 7 pars. Add his birdie on #9 and he has 23 points in his last 10 holes. His +3 Tournament Total is the number to beat.

Randy starts the Back 9 with 4 pars before a bogey on #14. However, 3 pars and a birdie on #17 finishes his round with a +6 37 points. Added to his even net score in Round 1, his +6 is now the leader in the clubhouse.

Rick, Dean, and Jeff all have 2 double-bogeys in their first 4 holes on the Back to knock them out of the first-place chase. This leaves Brian and Raymond as the last contenders.

They both bogey 10 to slow their charge and Brian doubles 11 to really put him in a bind. Raymond steadies with a string of pars. With 4 holes to play, they need to put the pedal down. Brian needs 7 points to tie, and Raymond needs 10. Randy's birdie on #17 gives him that 1 extra point that will be hard to catch.

Raymond pars 15, 16, and 17, but that leaves him 4 short with 1 to play. Only an Ace will allow him to retain the trophy.

Brian bogeys #15 but pars 16 to keep him in the chase. An unfortunate double on #17 puts him in the same boat as Raymond, he is 4 back with 1 to play.

Both players valiantly par #18 to claim a tie for second, passing Tom by 1 but 2 shy of the leader.

The changing of the guard.
