Buckle up and drive straight ahead

CGOTY 24

Mother Nature has pushed final round into the month of October as Tuesday will be the day we crown our new champion. I hate to discourage those not playing in the tournament to skip Tuesday, but we have 18 and the 6 threesome format worked well Thursday. As usual, however, we are always accommodating and will work things out.

After the first 5 groups came in Thursday, it looked like the tournament was wide open with nobody getting too far ahead.

Then in comes Brian in the last group with his +7 score. As anyone who follows golf knows, however, there are never any guarantees in this funny game. Ask Greg Norman and all the other pros who blew big leads in a major championship. Add to that the fact that Brian doesn't have one night to think about it but several. Here is what our defending champion Raymond, who will be in the group with Brian as the leading challenger, had to say about the situation, "I do not wish Brian any bad luck but that's a lot of time to think about how big this chance is for him. He may never be in this position again to win such a big-time event. It will be interesting to see if our young UPS driver will be able to deliver the goods on Tuesday."

Don't count out any of the players who managed a plus score on Thursday as they are all capable of matching Brian's first round score.

September Review

Only 12 days of play for the month. We had 28 different participants this month play 161 rounds for a 13+ average per day.

Tom had 4 CTP's in September to extend his lead to a likely uncatchable number. Glen and Clint won 2 each to leave only 4 for the other 25 players to fight over.

Leroy was the Medal winner of the month with 3. Floyd was the only other multiple winner with 2. He was very selective in his wins though, both on a Thursday when it actually pays off.

Leroy has the last laugh by being the money leader for the month. His $75 total tops Randy's $63 and Tom's $51.

Twelve players saw their handicap number rise, led by Leroy's 4-point jump. Eight saw their number drop and seven maintained.

Regular Thursday Results

Brian, Clint, and Dean have one of the biggest cash grabs this year by splitting $72 of the 90 available. Brian accounted for most of the greed by winning the CTP and being Thursday Medalist. They easily won the Front 9 and held on to also claim the Total.

Tom, Randy, and Scott prevent the clean sweep by coming out on top in a close 3-way chase for the Back 9.

Leroy's 9 game win streak ends.

SEMO Senior News

While it hasn't been as prosperous as other years, the Boy's performance at Crown Point must be mentioned.

Gary wins $80 for his second place in Older Group 6.

Leroy earns $25 and Allen $15 in Super Senior Group 2.

In Super Senior 1 Group, Clint closes out his SEMO Senior career with a $25 win.

Also in Super Senior 1, Bob earns $80 for second place net division.

Dean wins 3rd place ($70) in the scratch division by shooting 73-73 146 Total.

Glen wins first place in the scratch division for the $100 first place check. Now the rest of the story. Following is a picture of Leroy presenting Glen with his 2nd day scorecard.

Still in awe of what he witnessed; Leroy gives us the details of Glen's 2nd round. Mind you, Glen's first round was a 4-under par 68. Glen eagled 3 of the four par 5's, birdied 7 other holes to offset his lone bogey of the day. Boys and girls, that adds up to 60 strokes. I double checked with Leroy when he first gave me this news but there it is. I asked Glen if he actually had a putt for a 59 but it turns out his last hole was one of the par 5's and he made the putt for eagle and a score more than out of the ordinary. Congrats to Glen for an unforgettable day.
