Weekend Wrap Up

Doc's Day, Leroy's Week, New BB's Honor Roll

All In Today's Post!

Relatively small turnouts of 11 and 10 on Thursday and Friday did not diminish the caliber of play nor the excitingly tight team competition. It also did not deter the continued battering of the Bud's Boys Record Book. These new records posted this week sent me digging into the BB's archives. This endeavor results in the brand new '2023 Bud's Boys Honor Roll', listed after today's score sheets. Keep reading for all the Bud's Boys numbers you will never ever need.

"There is a 100% chance that you won't shoot your best score ever if you don't play today."

Thursday Nov 16 (Now known as Doc's Day)

The Thursday lineup numbered 11 BB's. Two of the 11 battled to the finish in a big way on this Thursday Medalist Day.

Dean breaks out of the gate with 3 birdies in his first 5 holes on the way to a 20-point Front 9. A par-birdie-par start on the Back gives him 27 points with 6 holes to play!

Doc starts out with 1 birdie but the rest pars to finish the Front 9 with 19 points. A birdie-par-par start to the Back leaves Doc with 26 points, 1 back of Dean.

Probably due to the distraction of the lackluster play of his partners, Dean is slowed by 3 straight bogeys before finishing with 3 pars and an even par 36 points. His +7 puts him as the leader in the clubhouse for Thursday Medalist.

Meanwhile, Doc continues his bogey-free round with all pars through 16, giving him a slight edge on Dean with 2 holes to play. The Moment of Truth has arrived.

Hole 17

There is no argument that Doc hit a strong drive straight down the middle. There does seem to be some 'misremembering' when it comes to the distance he has left to the pin. I have heard everything from a lengthy 178 to a mere 80 yards. I will go with the conventional wisdom of 95-100 yards.

Regardless of the distance, the approach shot was on a bee line to the flag when, as in most cases with the group, no one could actually see the ball when it reached the green. Hitting directly into the sun combined with the continuing decline of our collective abilities to see past 25 yards, left some doubt to the final position of Doc's Yellow Srixon. Credit the Iceman for suggesting, "It could be in the hole" when the ball was nowhere to be seen on our arrival to the green. Indeed, the ball was in the hole for an eagle 2.

The 5-point bonus for eagle was game, set, match in the 1-on-1 duel with Dean, giving Doc 39 points with #18 yet to play.

It is totally understandable that someone having the best round of his life, having just made eagle, walks from 17 green to 18 tee box in somewhat of a stupor. His ensuing tee shot barely cleared the water, though it is doubtful he remembers the swing at all. A good approach chip gives him a chance at a bogey free day, unfortunately the putt wanders by the hole for the only blemish on a still unforgettable round.

Doc finishes with 40 points, good for a +10 Medal. Congratulations to Doc on his career best score of 3-under 68.

Scott, Bob, and Butch take advantage of Doc's lack of support (see above) to win the Front and Total.

Leroy models his brand-new yellow shirt while hitting off a tough lie on #17.

Friday Nov 17

Returning to play Friday following his big day, Doc had a surprise waiting for him as he pulled his cart up to the practice green. His own parking spot (compliments of Scott).

The records were breaking left and right at Kimbeland CC today and by the time the group shuffled off the patio after a post round hour-long recap of today's events, we agreed that the following records had been broken.

(Of course, this agreement is based on the memories of those participating in the round-table discussion, a bar that is not very high.)

1. Longest running Rabbit. Little did Butch know that when he stuck the last tee shot of the day just inside Jeff's previous best for the CTP, that the following birdie putt would snare the Rabbit on #18. The first time in BB's history to go that far.

2. 3 players reach +10 in one week (Leroy, Scott, Doc).

3. Leroy's +7 Medal gives him 3 Medals for the week. Another BB's first.

4. Leroy finishes the week at +30. The highest one-week total ever.

5. Leroy's teams win 13 events this week, most ever for 1 week.

One-of-a-kind.

Bud's Boys 2023 Honor Roll

Doc's 40-point +10 effort brought up the topic of 'Bests'. Using those numbers, I scanned through my tattered little notebook where some of the scribbling is easier to read on some pages than others to see who had attained those numbers. If anyone thinks they have been left out, just give me the date and I will look it up. Coincidentally, there are 8 entries in each column.

I present to you our own Honor Roll.
